4 Simple Steps to Turn Your Den into a Cosy Reading Nook

Truth be told, you don’t even need a den! Any corner of your condo can be turned into somewhere you want to snuggle up with your latest Bridgerton novel. Just a quick wave of your Harry Potter wand (AKA following a few of these super simple steps) and you’ll have the book nook of your dreams faster than you can say “You know nothing, Jon Snow.”

1. Plop down some cute throw pillows

The softness will not only look cosy, but it will dampen some noise, too! Plus, you can rest your head on it in case you accidentally read yourself to sleep. ;)

A “cute” style pillow will give the biggest coziness vibes, but modern, boho, and other styles will work just as well, so have a little fun to make the space your own.

2. Bring in some fresh greenery

Living plants will breathe life – literally – into your reading nook. And isn’t there something delightfully relaxing about nurturing another being?

Plus, being around plants naturally soothes the brain, which is perfect for getting ready to forget your daily stresses and focus on a good book.

Fake plants work surprisingly well too, especially if your den doesn’t get a lot of natural light. Mixing fake plants with a real one or two is a good way to hide the fact that some of your plant life is less alive than the rest.

3. Decorate the walls

Putting a few items on the wall – plants, paintings, shelves, etc – can add depth to the higher spaces of your room, making it feel taller and larger.

Plus, wall ornaments will help absorb sound. To increase this effect, sneak acoustic foam into the back of canvases and anything with a hollow pocket between it and your wall.

A stack of books on a low table.

4. Add a pile of books

I love a fat stack – of books!

Adding a big ol’ pile of books (besides the one you’re currently reading) is the final touch that really amps up the reading-nook vibes to tie together your whole space!

Pick the cutest-looking books, ones that match your decor, or books with titles that inspire you. I like to display books that can serve as a sort of mantra or talisman for my long-term goals.

By the way, the Japanese have a word for exactly this! “Tsundoku” is a pile of books that one hasn’t read yet. If you’re like me, you may already be an accidental master of tsundoku!

Now that you’ve created an atmosphere that you never want to leave, all that’s left for you to do is grab some iced tea or hot chocolate, a good book, and get transported to another world entirely!
