Products to Make Your Studio Apartment Feel Like a 1-Bedroom

A bright, sunny studio apartment with wood flooring and mid-century modern furniture.

So a studio condo seemed like a good idea at the time – but now you’re working from home, you’ve rescued an adorable boxer-mix pup, and the price of upgrading to a full one-bedroom in today’s market would increase your rent by over 50%. Trust me, you’re not alone.

Luckily, there are more products than ever to help add separation and zen to your rent-controlled bachelor(ette) pad.

1. Folding Screens

A very modern dark green living room with a light brown armchair and pink folding screen behind it.

You can also put them in front of a plain wall to quickly add interest or hide unsightly holes.

Put one at the end or side of your bed that is closest to your living room or sitting area.

These are great because they require zero handy skills and only about 30 seconds of your time to install. There are so many different styles that you’ll be able to find one that matches your condo’s decor, from barn-door style folding screens to folding screens that have storage shelves!

Their only downside is that you might have a harder time getting it home than actually putting it up. I recommend getting yours delivered.

2. Hanging Room Dividers / Panel Curtains

If you’re a little handier, you can install a panel curtain track on your ceiling to create separation instead of a folding screen. They’re semi-permanent so they’re a sturdier option if you’re in your space for the long haul. IKEA has sold panel curtains for years (look for “ceiling mounted” sets), but other sites like Wayfair and Amazon have a few options too.

3. Temporary Walls

A colourful studio apartment. There is a hole cut through a dividing wall.

Temporary walls mean you can go ahead and cut a hole in them.

Depending on your condo building’s rules, you may or may not be able to make changes inside your unit like adding a dividing wall. If you’re not allowed to add one, here’s the good news: You can still add a pretty convincing temporary wall.

If you’re renting, you’ll definitely want to clear this with your landlord first because depending on the style, the wall could leave scuff marks on the floor ceiling.

4. A headboard and more!

A half-made bed in a sleek, modern green bedroom with a folding screen beside it.

Instant sleepy vibes.

Finally: Often in studio apartments, our instinct is to keep our bed as low-key as possible so the eye isn’t drawn to it. But now that you’ve given your bed its own room, it’s time to dress it up! Your bed no longer need be a shrinking violet! Let it be loud and proud in its new, dedicated space. Give it a headboard. Give it loud, decorative pillows. Give it a big, fluffy comforter. Make it reflect both your style and your sleeping preferences. And get better sleep tonight!
